File of correspondence primarily between Galway County Council (GCC), the lessor and legal representatives, and others. relating to the letting of, repairs to and insurance for Town and County Hall. (may be references in the Finance Committee minutes), and related matters including reviews of rent and financial accounts, and income tax charges. Includes;
·1929 - Revenue statement for County Hall for year ended £289.6.8 -: Galway UDC pay £15 pa for use of meeting room in county Hall;
·1930-03-24 - Letter from Galway Urban District Council (UDC) to GCC asking if it would be prepared to hand over to them the Town Hall ;
·1930-09-30 - Letter from Co. Secretary to Co. Surveyor indicating lessee has applied to erect a Cineamatograph box at the back of the Town Hall; to request an inspection of the site and report to the Finance Committee, giving an estimate of the cost of the proposed work;
·1930-10 - unsigned tender for special works re Cinemabox between Laurence O'Toole & GCC;
·1930-10-30 - Letter from A/County Secretary to Co. Surveyor where GCC accepted the Tender of Mr P Dooley, Eyre Street, Galway at £69:15:0 for the erection of the box;
·1930-11-01 - Cimenatopgrah Licence, issued by Galway UDC to Francis Hardiman- with conditions;
·1931-01 0 - correspondence relating to a possible rent increased - “(5) Hall used by Social, Educational and Charitable Institutions to each of their monetary interests and any change of tenancy would not be in the interests of such Institutions or would be prejudicial to the conveniences of the ratepayers in general… (7) Tenant has been in occupation of the Hall for 15 years, during very troubled and disturbed periods and has in every way been a satisfactory tenant”;
·1931-03 - correspondence between GCC and Galway UCD regarding the rate charged by GCC for the latter’s use of the Hall.
·1936-03-31 ; '...subject of the letting is the main hall of the County Buildings, otherwise known as the Town and county Hall, and the four rooms on either side of the stage of the said main hall, which the use of the room called the Council Chamber when it is not being used by the Galway UDC. The rent payable by the tenant is £45 per quarter, the County Council being responsible for the ground rent, rates and taxes. The tenant is responsible for internal repairs as well as for the cleaning, lighting, and heating of the portion of the premises which are the subject of the letting. The Agreement contains a provisions that the main hall and rooms shall be available for meetings on any day or night during the continuance of the letting on notice being given to the tenant 48 hours previously by the Secretary of the Co. Co. If the meeting is held at night between the hours of 8 o’clock and 11 o’clock the tenant is entitled to a payment of £4 for each such night. The hall must also be available for election purposes without any notice and fee of £3 is payable for each day including night during which the hall is used for such purposes';
·23/11/1936 - letter in relation to the Town Hall where a schedule was submitted giving particulars of the average expenses incurred during the four years ended on the 31/03/1936;
·1936-11-23 - Letter from Co. Sec GCC to Council members re GCC minute 5951 on 3 Oct 1936 re Town Hall ; Average annual expenditure for 4 yrs was £201.16.11 for letting of Town Hall (To Hardiman); need for repairs to roof; Rent of £300 pa agreed;
·1938-01-10 - handwritten letter form L G Bell to Co. Secretary advising it is proposed to form a Branch of St John Ambulance Society (Nursing Division) in Galway and 'we (lady members of the Branch) are in need of a room in which to function...';
·1940-11-20 - Copy letter from Co. Sec to Town Clerk Galway Borough Co. - regarding the condition of offices in Town Hall, which Corporation used - as the Corporation hand over possession of the offices to GCC following termination of their tenancy;
·1941-01-29 - copy letter from Co. Sec to Secretary of the Galway Homes & Homes Assistance Committee advising GCC is prepared to rent to the Committee the office premises in the Town Hall previously occupied by the Borough Co, following repairs. - offer accepted by Committee at rent of £35 pa;
·1941-03-12 - repair costs to former Borough Co. offices - £43.10.0 (includes specification and estimate for works) ; also includes various quotes issued on headed paper e.g. L O'Toole & Sons, Joinery Works ; E O'Flaherty & Co, Painting, Decorating Signwriting etc ; Martin Fleming General Contractor - tender from Patrick Dooley & Co accepted at £25.7.6;
·1941-05 - Local Defence Force apply for office accommodation - former Board Room could be offered to LDF;
·1943-09 - proposed building of new fire escape;
·1943-09-09 - copy letter from F. Hardiman (Superintendent/caretaker) to Co. Manager, providing background to the Town Hall lease and various rent charges over the period of his tenancy (e.g. cinema has seating capacity of 524 seats (Estoria had a capacity of 700 and Savoy of 2000 (ltr 23/01/1945) ; staff of 14; weekly wage bill amounts to over £20) and indicating the profits are not large and do not warrant a rent increase; 'the hall is not the gold mine some people may think' (p3);
·1943-12-06 - Letter from Government to Co. Manager regarding the possibility of the Government purchasing or leasing the Town Hall for the purposes of an Irish Theatre; the control and management of An Taibhdhearc rest entirely with a local board of Directors - those it receives state subsidy. The State subsidy is not a permanent grant. In circumstance there can be no question of the purchase or leasing of the Town Hall by the Government;
·1943-12 - repairs to roof required;
·1945-06-20 - lease for Town Hall agreed, for 20 year period at £240 pa (lease not on file) ;
·1951 - includes estimate and drawing for conversion of offices at the Town Hall;
·1963 -08 - Statement of A/c for 4 yrs. to 31 Mar 1963 and period 31.3.1963 to 26.8/1963 and balance sheet 26/8/1963 - Nora Hardiman Deceased, Town Hall Cinema, Galway; and Statement of A/c 26 Aug 9163 to 31 Mar 1964 & Balance Sheet as at 31/3/1964 W B Hardiman & Miss Annie J Hardiman; issued by Murphy & Co Auditors & Accountants.
