Tuam Town Commissioners, Tolls from Cattle Mart: File of material relating to the collection of tolls in Tuam,
includes correspondence between the Tuam Town Clerk (Gerald O'Connor), Tuam Town Manager, generally the Assistant County Manager (Tom O'Connor), and Tuam Co-operative Livestock Mart Ltd regarding the payment of tolls on animals sold in the mart, and details of meetings held on 7 August 1962 and 27 April 1965 to discuss the issue, with the latter including a statment from the Assistant County Manager stating 'No other body had a right to establish a market in these areas without the consent of the respective Market Authorities and tolls were payable in respect of stock sold in any such market. The Local Authorities concerned had examined the legal position carefully and had been advised that they had a right of action against the Co-operative Marts in Athenry, Tuam and Ballinasloe for holding markets without paying any tolls in repsect of animals sold at such markets. The revenue derived by the Local Authorities from the statutory markets which they operated had dropped consequent of the opening of the Marts...', also includes handwritten notes with details of tolls and customs collected by TCC between 1955-1963.
