Dominican Convent, Taylor’s Hill, Galway, booklets and photographs, one of a hockey team
Dominican Convent, Taylor’s Hill, Galway. Two souvenir booklets of the Dominican Convent and College, with various images, interior and external, of the Convent; a Black & White postcard group photograph [Gelatine Silver Developing out paper DOP] of the College Hockey Team (c.1912), featuring 11 young ladies, all with [white] high collared blouses, striped ties and dark shirts. The front row is holding hockey sticks. The group are outside standing beside a rough building and bare leaved tree trunks, with some railings visible in the background. Several names are handwritten in ink on the photograph indicating, K E Tennant; P Tennant; M. Casey, BA; M Tennant in the back row; and in the front M J Donovan, MA; E Paul; K O’Doherty BA.
Also includes a portrait image of an unknown young lady, wearing a long-sleeved light-coloured blouse, with soft pleats, high rounded collar and narrow stripped tie. Her hair is in a soft bun, with large ribbon. (possibly Dominican College, Galway uniform).
The Thread sown booklet (n.d. c. 1915), with ‘Views from negatives by C. J. Leaper, 6 Nun’s Island, Galway’, includes an introduction page, indicating ‘This establishment is within one mile of the town of Galway. it is situated on the southern slope of Taylor’s Hill and commands a fine view of Galway Bay…’ . The images are interleafed with tissue paper, some of empty rooms, and others with pupils posed, such as on the grass tennis court, the Cookery Class and Section of playground which depicts children on bicycles and standing on the grass. Others include for instance, ‘Bay, from College Balcony’, ‘Front Hall’, ‘College Class Room’ (with grand piano, several chairs and at least two religious statues), also images of the dormitory and refectory, a group photograph of the Orchestra, taken outside, with the girls in five rows, tiered on steps, with the front row seated on the grass, and 2nd row on chairs/ stools, with their instruments, which include a harp, violins, drums, cellos, triangles, and double bass.
Some images include pupils, such as those of the Cookery Class and Section of play-ground which depicts children on bicycles and standing on the grass.
Inscribed “To dearest Gertie with love and congratulations from her old friends Sister Josephine and Sister M Dominic.
The 2nd booklet includes 6 sepia images of empty rooms, such as the Study Hall and cubicle in the dormitory, and also view of Galway Bay and Clare hills from Balcony (c. 1940s.)
