The collection consists of material relating to the administration and management of the estate of Edward Martyn, Tillyra Castle, County Galway for the short period between 1883-1889. It is comprised mostly of rentals and various details pertaining to tenants, such as lists of arrears and proposal to lease property and includes Notices to Quit and Notices to Surrender. The material and correspondence is generally prepared by the Rent Office in Galway, managed by the agent John Redington, with James Acton, also a tenant, assisting.
The papers deal with tenants in various townlands such as Ballinduff, Ballyconnell, Dungory, Poulaveigh, Gardenblake, Skehanagh, Coolfin, Inchaboy, Coxtown, Caheratrin Caheramona, Clooneen, Ballymarkin, Anngley, Lisamoyle, Gortsruckanagh, Killimore, Shessy South, Banragh, Raheally, Kinvara South, Reasgariff, Gorteenboy, Roscommon, Market St. Galway, Moycullen, Mount Bernard and Tillyra.
Includes Bond relating to Redington’s appointment as agent (1885, GPL14/2) and Power of Attorney granted to Redington (1885, GP14/3), to receive ‘all and every rent and rents’… for Martyn’s estate in county Galway.
As a substantial number of estate tenants are individually named, in many cases giving information on arrears, the collection is likely to be of interest to family historians.
