Sruthan (Shruffaun / Shreffaun) Quay / Pier, Carraroe: Includes correspondence primarily internal, and with teh OPW, Roinn na Gaeltachta relating to the ongoing maintenance of the prer. Includes for instance,
- 1903, Correspondence between GCC and OPW (Office of Public Works) relating to damage to the platform, to be repaired in 1906 @ approx. £50, further damage reported 'to the north east corner of the pier and to the wharf pavement' (21 May 1907) which was repaired c 1908;
- 1912, two large holes in masonry on top of pier; damage generally done by boat owners who are often in the habit of driving temporary posts through the masonry of the flooring to which they make fast their boats (26 Apr 1912);
- 1952 cololour drawing of proposed extension and storm (No. 577/1)
- 1950s, proposal to carry out improvement works at estimated cost of £1,110 (e.g. provide 38 ft extension with concrete steps, rock removal, repairs to surface of existing pier; Letter from Dept of Industry & Commerce advised that ‘…Office of Public Works to carry out works & custody of works with responsibility for future maintenance to Galway County Council' (1953); Special Employment Scheme to be used; copy of Agreement regarding the works ; Co. Co. to pay % of costs, includes MO No. 24067 approving contribution of £287.10 to the improvement costs (20 Feb 1953);
Letter from Dept of Industry and Commerce to GCC referring to the 'arrangements made by the Office of Public Works, Dublin, to carry out improvements to the landing facilities at Shruffaun, Co. Glaway and to hand over custody of the works with responsibility for future maintenance to your Council' The OPW requested that the 'licence which is necessary under the Foreshore Act, 1933 should be issued to your Council. The mater has ben under examination in this Department and I am to inform you that, on receipt of a letter from your Council applying for the necessary licence and enclosing a nominal payment of one shilling as an acknowledgement of the rights and interests of the State in the foreshore concerned, the Minister will be prepared to consider the grant of a licence by way of permission in writing under Section 3 of the said Act' ( 5 Nov 1953). Also includes letter from OPW to GCC noting that 'your Council has agreed to contribute 25% of the cost estimated at £1,800 of proposed additional improvements to the Pier at Shruffaun, Co. Galway, and to accept responsibility for the maintenance of the works when completed, and we have been asked by the Office to make arrangements for putting the works in hand; (27 Jan 1955), and signed & sealed agreement in respect of improvements of the landing facilities (1 Jun 1955);
1962 - internal memo from the Co. Engineer to the Co. Secretary advising that the 'County Council is responsibile for the maintenance ofthis pier but it does appear to me that neither of the above works could be classified as maintenace...' (13 Aug 1962).
- 1971, Signed specification for improvements works includes rising in concrete the deck of existing pier; rock clearance etc
1971, drawings of deck improvements, and
- 1978, lights required, estimated cost £800, grant received from Roinn na Gaeltachta towards the cost to enable GCC have the work carried out.
