Files no. xx to xx were held by the Environment section of Galway County Council and transferred to the Archives Service in 2023. It is very likely the earlier files were held in Corporate Services (aka General Purposes, County Secretary’s Office) prior to the establishment of the Environment section in approx. the late 1980s or early 1990s.
The original file reference codes used were pre-fixed with 56/, with an additional numeral to indicate specific sub-function. 56/1 for Fire Stations (see file Arclink code 2023: E/FP/112/I1/0033) ; 56/2 for Fire Brigades; 56/3 for Organisation, communication, reviews & CAMP ; 56/4 for Equipment ; 56/5 for Miscellaneous e.g. Admin / finance ? ; 56/6 for Officials ; 56/7 for Fire precautions ; 56/8 for Reports & Committees ; 56/9 for Fire Brigade Personnel ; 99/1/19 for Factories Act ; and 109/38/85 for Civil; Defence (Misc).
It would also appear that possibly in the late 1980s the 56/x was dropped and replaced with the letter F/.
Subsequently, when the files were transferred to off-site storage and listed on Arclink (a records management database used by GCC from c. 2008 onwards) the pre-fix code for files was E/FP/ to indicate Environment / Fire Prevention, followed by additional numerals to distinguish various sub-functions and activities of the services and files.
In early 2008 the function was transferred from the Environment, Water & Emergency Services directorate to the directorate of Housing & Emergency Services Unit. In 2023 the service was transferred again, this time going under the directorship of Infrastructure & Operations, Fire & Emergency Management, as it was felt that the work they undertake in many areas is intrinsically linked, from Major Emergency planning to preparedness for severe weather events and to facilitate the seamless clean-ups after such events.
