Papers relating to the families of Purefoy of Offaly and Turbett of Dublin /Bill of Costs
Bill of Costs issued by Joseph H. Cowan, 10 Dorset Street, Dublin in relation to Plaintiffs costs in the case
of Robert Turbett and wife, Mary Anne Turbett (nee Purefoy), where the latter was the administratrix for
the Will of her aunt, Miss Thomasin Purefoy, deceased, Plantiffs against Rev Thomas Purefoy [Thomasin’s
brother] and others.
Thomasin obtained a Judgement against James Purefoy (her brother) in 1764 for £1,000 conditioned for the
payment of £500 and Thomas Smyth obtained another Judgement against James Purefoy for the same sum.
Smyth assigned on 25th Aug 1764 to Thomasin who subsequently bequeathed both Judgements debts to
her niece Miss Mary Anne Purefoy, who shortly after married Mr Turbett, whereby both Judgements
became vested in him in ‘right of his said wife’.
Costs relate to advice given in 1828 on the most ‘judicious mode to be pursued in the recovery’ of the
judgements. Turbett obtained possession of a moiety of the lands [Clonbullock /Clonbullogue, Co. Offaly],
bound by Judgement and received a portion of the rents but that in order to serve and accommodate Rev.
T.Purefoy, the principal defendant, he had ceased to receive the rents and he directed Cowan to make
himself acquainted with the situation of the lands and in order to file a Bill for the sale to satisfy the
Judgements. Total cost £91.12.0.
