Papers relating to the families of Purefoy of Offaly and Turbett of Dublin
Papers, including private letters, Bill of Costs, and a Rental (1880), pertaining to the Turbett lands in Kilmacshane, Clonfert, Co. Galway, and at Clonbullogue in Co. Offaly (see for instance GP16/6 and 9). The earlier papers in the collection, 1732 to 1829, relate primarily to James Purefoy (+1880) and his son-in-law Robert Turbett. A 1796 letter between the two men, Includes Interesting references to the Eyres of Eyrecourt (GP16/3), wherein Purefoy writes ‘Mrs Giles Eyre has produced another son so that John had better contract Articles of marriage with them for his two infantas and then they will have the full blood of the House of Eyrecourt between them’. This letter also includes genealogical notes on the Purefoy and Turbett families.
The collection also includes papers (1852-1880) pertaining to James Exham Purefoy Turbett (fl. 1791-1868), a wine merchant based in Dublin (son of Robert) and to his wife Sophia (nee Gore), and Brinsley Purefoy (1812-1893) of Banagher Co. Offaly. Purefoy was the Turbett's for a period from circa 1830-1880 (GP16/12) for their Galway property at Kilmacshane, Clonfert, Co. Galway. Details contained in a 1880 Rental (GP16/12) illustrate Brinsley Purefoy had a good knowledge of the ‘condition’ of the tenants of Killmacshane, and in the accompanying covering letter that, Sophia took a keen, and likely sympathetic, interest in their welfare too.
