County Secretary's Office / Piers & Harbours / Tawnaghbawn, Cashel, 1903-15, 1967-1982
- Letter from OPW to GCC Co. Secretary, that ‘the pierhead at Cashel Pier has broken away, that the mason work of portion of the pier has fallen into the harbour, and that the latter is thus rendered dangerous to vessels entering it’ (16 Oct 1903).
- Includes note written by James Perry, Co. Surveyor, advising, ‘This work has not been completed…’ (5 Sept 1906).
- Handwritten letter from Thomas O’Malley (deputy Co. Surveyor) to W Gordon Seymour, Secretary GCC, advising that ‘I shall very shortly be masking a general inspection of piers and labours when I shall be able to report on the repair works to this pier’ (22 Nov 1907).
- Repairs complete (1 Oct 1908)
- ‘Pier Head of Cashel… which is built with stone and concrete was knocked down this morning, the 17th Inst., by force of the heavy waves from the sea crashing against it during the storm …’(19 Feb 1910).
- ‘I have investigated the matter of Wallace’s Quay near Cashel and find it is the property of the Irish Land Commission’ (29 Feb 1968).
- ‘I wish to state that the Council have no responsibility for the repairs to the breakwater in Tawnaghbawn, Cashel. OPW may have same’ (18 Nov 1970).
- ‘The wall in question was built by the Irish Land Commission in the mid-thirties to prevent flooding of the low lying land in the area. The wall has now been breached by the sea and the land in question floods at high tide. The Council has no function in this matter because it is flooding of low lying land that is involved rather than coast erosion and would come under the heading of land reclamation’ (10 Feb 1982).
