SPIDDAL PIER: Includes :
- proposal for erection of navigation light at pier for benefit of local fishermen, subject to Commissioners of Irish Lights (1930s); letter from F Barrett & Co with details of Wigham’s Patent 31-day continuous burning petroleum Beacon lamp etc overall cost of equipment £281.9.3; details regarding a loan of £300 ; caretaker to be appointed to look after lamp (1936); insurance for equipment : lamp out of order for sometime, sent for repairs, estimated cost £420 (1952);
- 1956, Letter from Lord Killanain suggesting works required e.g. provision of latrine & litter baskets, road improvement to pier etc
- 1965, light wrecked by gale in October 1961 - need to repair considered;
- 1974, considerable damage to pier by recent storms, repairs estimated at £15,000 - £20,000; and
- 1994, Height restriction barriers erected on public roads leading to old & new pier.
