Series of files, primarily with typed letters and reports, on the maintenance and repair of piers & harbours in county Galway. In particular, contains correspondence between the County Secretary and County Engineer, the Special Employment Schemes Office (Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin) and Office of Public Works (OPW), and in some instances with Roinn na Gaeltachta /The Dept of the Gaeltacht, and Congested Districts Board of Ireland, the relating to the repair and maintenance of, and funding for the marine works and the lighting of piers, the provision of railings and life-buoys (e.g. GC/CSO/002/24, 1 May 1968) and in some instances relating to the tolls.
Earlier files may include details relating to the provision and or upgrading of harbour facilities. Many include small specifications relating to works, accompanying drawings and Agreements governing the execution of the works from the Commissioners of Public Works, together with correspondence relating to the issue of Foreshore Licences by the Department of Industry & Commerce or subsequently by the Department of Transport and Power to Galway County Council, wherein the latter takes responsibility for the future maintenance of a marine work, after repair and improvements works have been carried out, generally by the OPW.
Also includes a sub-series of public notices (GC/CSO/2/1/xx) relating to the rules and regulation governing the use of the marine works, and schedules of the tolls and rates that apply for such usage.
