Galway County Council, Education Committee Minutes, 1911-1979
Volumes of minutes of the Education Committee meetings, generally held about four times a year until circa 1952, thereafter twice yearly. Handwritten up to 1922, thereafter typed pages pasted into the volumes.
Includes details of attendance, details of business transacted relating to the administration of all County Education Committee schemes, such as primary, secondary (as free secondary education was introduced in 1967 the final entry relating to secondary school scholarships in the minutes is for 25 July 1966 (GC/6/5, p14)), and university scholarships, prizes and grants. Much of the detail relates to the awarding of scholarships to the various candidates, giving up until circa 1952, names of students, details of award, and amounts awarded, details of the secondary school examination timetable (see for instance 25 March 1922, GC/6/2). For the secondary school scholarships generally includes, on an annual basis often in September, a full list of the grants issued giving the name of the student, school, and marks awarded in various examinations. In instances where a student failed term examinations no scholarship payment was made. Also includes details of deferrals.
The passing of the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act 1968 put the grant schemes on a more official footing, with subsequent more direction from the Department of Education.
