Burkes of Ballydugan / Michael Henry Burke (1853-1935) / Letter from Michael H Burke to his son, William St George Burke

Partial letter (on Royal Irish Automobile Club headed-paper) about his architect, Dunlop and the contractor being at loggerheads, Dunlop delaying his final inspection but agreeing that the ‘cracks in the chimney in the new addition should be rectified and other sundry defects’ (p1-2).  Advising that he obtained a degree against Costello, who ‘has cleared out’ (p2), and again telling how Joyce allowed Dempsey stay on as caretaker; a ‘decent Protestant farmer has purchased Rathfaran about the price of the land and the house and stables etc’ (p2); the Civic Guards have left Ballydugan and he hopes ‘for the present Dempsey and his gun man (former boy) are pacified since Joyce made D. a caretaker’ (p3), and how he was told Joyce, agent, that he will manage the estate himself and offered him 5% ‘on the rent I collected for the last ½ year as we had only a very small amount to collect’ (p4).
