Maps of the (Headford) estate of Richard St. George Manseragh St. George in the county of Galway in 1775 by Charles Frizell, Junior. With rent roll and description of the farms.
The survey commences with a general description of Headford town stating it is ‘..about a mile from Lough Corrib where you have a Water Carriage for large Boats to ply to Galway which is not more than 12 miles by water, the Town has every convenience, first it is a healthful situation having plenty of turf, very contiguous for firing, good water, and the lands exceeding fertile, limestone grounds fit for grazing or tillage, ….Also the Town parks beginning at Gurnamona and extending to Cloonavamoge are much out of heart which if improved would be worth from £1.2.9 to £1.5 per acre…..Headford would become the stopping place from Ballinrobe & Castlebar for Travellers and probably bring inhabitants to reside which from its remote situation at present and for want of encouragement no Stranger had any inducement to settle. There are several looms in the Town if encouragement is given to Linen manufacturers to settle may in some time hence flourish…’ (p6).
The pictorial maps show the layout of individual farms, the position of adjacent farms and location of additional features such as houses, bogs, rivers, trees and so on.
