Your Right to Access Information
You have the right to get a copy of the information held about you by Galway County Council. This is called a Subject Access Request, as outlined in Article 15 of the GDPR.
What You Can Access:
- Confirmation of whether your personal data is being processed.
- Access to your personal data.
- Information about the purposes of processing.
- Categories of personal data.
- Recipients of your data.
- Storage period or criteria for determining it.
- Your rights to request rectification, erasure, or restriction of processing.
- Right to lodge a complaint.
- Source of your data (if not collected from you).
- Details of automated decision-making, including profiling.
How to Make a Subject Access Request:
- Complete the Subject Access Request Application Form.
- Provide photographic ID (e.g., Irish Driving Licence, Public Services Card, or Passport).
- Provide proof of address (e.g., recent utility bill, bank statement, or official correspondence).

Processing Your Request:
- We will respond within one month of receiving a valid request.
- If identification is not verified, the response time will start once verification is complete.
- For complex or numerous requests, we may extend the response time by two months and will inform you within one month.
Charges:
- Subject Access Requests are free.
- We may charge a reasonable fee for excessive or repetitive requests.
Reasons for Refusal:
- Requests that are manifestly unfounded or excessive.
- Certain circumstances may limit your right to access, such as national security, public security, or ongoing investigations.
Complaints: If you are unhappy with a decision, you can contact the Data Protection Officer or make a complaint to the Data Protection Commissioner at www.dataprotection.ie.
