Galway County Council in partnership with Galway Rural Development, Forum Connemara and various community groups and schools are involved in the recording and digitally mapping the graveyards and their memorial inscriptions. The recording of the memorial inscriptions takes a lot of hard work and preserverence in particular in dealing with the older and hard to read memorials. Local peoples’ knowledge and expertise is essential with regards to their knowledge of local names and also the local area. All of the communities and school groups who undertake this work, do so in an entirely voluntary capacity.
While the recording and mapping of graveyards has been going for many years more recently Galway County Council has updated the methodology of carrying out the surveys based on latest available technologies, with the aims of simplfying and streamlining the survey process and making the data collected as widely available as possible. This has resulted in a new 'County Galway Burial Records' search application which was offically launched on the 14th of August 2023. This application superseeds the Graveyards Search application and, once all data is migrated from the old to the new, will completly replace it. Until this is the case links to both applications are made available below for your use.
