The National Broadband Plan (NBP) is a Government policy that aims to ensure that every home, school and business in Ireland – regardless of how remote or rural – has access to high speed broadband.
This is being achieved through a combination of commercial investment across the country and state intervention in those areas where commercial operators acting alone are unlikely to invest.
The National Broadband Map can be searched to see how broadband is projected to be delivered in your area under the NBP. The map is best searched using the Eircode for the property you are trying to obtain a broadband connection for.
The map breaks down broadband delivery into three different categories or areas:
- AMBER areas - The amber area of this map is the State Intervention Strategy, which sets out the Government's approach to ensure that high speed broadband is made available to all households and businesses in the country where there is no existing or planned commercial network. This non-commercial high speed broadband area is known as "The Intervention Area". The National Broadband Plan is set to deliver high-speed fibre broadband to over 544,000 premises in the State, 38,000 of which are in county Galway and the projected investment in Co. Galway over the life of the project is €153 Million. Please go to www.nbi.ie where you see if your premises is included in the Intervention Area of the National Broadband Plan and you can register to be kept updated on the rollout progress. You can also contact NBI by emailing contactus@nbi.ie or lo-call 0818 624 624 with any queries you may have in relation to your premises. Galway county is one of the first counties where NBI are set to start construction by the end of 2020. NBI have provided the attached map which shows the sections of County Galway which will be covered by their 1st phase of construction. Not all properties in this mapped area will be provided with a service by NBI, only properties in the intervention rollout area, so it is important for persons seeking a broadband connection to check the National Broadband Map or NBI map on their web site to see if there property is covered by this scheme.
- BLUE areas – If your property is in a blue area, this is where commercial operators are delivering or have indicated plans to deliver high speed broadband services. Depending on where you live, you may have a choice of operators offering you this service. It may help to check www.comreg.ie/compare/#/services or another cost comparison search engine. If you have exhausted this avenue and cannot get high speed broadband from the providers in your area, please contact the Dept. of Communication by emailing broadband@dccae.gov.ie .
- LIGHT BLUE areas - If your premises is in a light blue area, this is an area where Open Eir has committed to commercial rural deployment. Information on this service can be found on fibrerollout.ie . It may help to check www.comreg.ie/compare/#/services or another cost comparison search engine.
