Galway County Council supports the Voluntary Housing Sector in the provision of various housing schemes throughout the county. There are a number of Approved Housing Bodies in County Galway providing accommodation for a variety of needs and household types including persons with special needs, the elderly, homeless and general family type accommodation. Many of these schemes provide facilities such as meeting rooms and day centres to benefit occupants.
The Council acts as an intermediary between the Approved Housing Body and the Department of the Environment and Local Government who fund the Voluntary Housing Schemes.
The Approved Housing Bodies consult with the Council when allocating to such schemes and persons on the Council’s Housing Waiting List may be considered for such housing. Persons accommodated in this way will be considered socially housed and their names will then be removed from the Housing Waiting List.
Houses allocated by a voluntary body cannot be purchased by the tenant.
All Approved Housing Bodies must sign up to the Voluntary Regulation Code to avail of funding from the department.
For more information please contact the Voluntary Housing Section on 091 509029.
