Sun Street, Tuam
Birds at Play
Name of Artist: Liam Butler
Materials Used: Welded Copper
Birds at Play, a sculptural piece made of welded copier, is installed at the small residential complex for mature tenants at Sun Street in Tuam.
Liam Butler is originally from Kilkenny and now lives and works in Galway. A welder by trade and a master craftsman, he is a completely self-taught sculptor who works in welded steel, copper and bronze using mostly recycled materials.
He draws his inspiration from his immediate environment – birds, currachs, fishermen, farmers, musicians and dancers feature strongly. Birds are a particular source of interest and this piece, made from recycled copper, incorporates a bird bath which provides vivid visual interest to the residents of the complex.
